Cycling & Wine Tasting Guide — Reschen / Mals → Merano → Bolzano

Vinschgau / Val Venosta · Meraner Land · Bolzano · the South Tyrolean Wine Road (Alto Adige / Südtirol)

A working guide to the vineyards, restaurants and beds along the Via Claudia Augusta / Etschtal cycle route, working downhill from the Reschen Pass and Mals through Merano to Bolzano, then south along the Wine Road. Three sections — Wine, Eat, Sleep — each covering the whole route end to end. Prices, hours and scores were current as of June 2026; always reconfirm directly, as small wineries change hours seasonally and often need an appointment, and many kitchens close 1–2 days a week.

Every entry has a [📍 Map] link that opens it in Google Maps.

The route & getting around

  • The Vinschgau / Via Claudia Augusta cycle path runs from Mals (Malles Venosta) down the Adige (Etsch) valley to Merano, roughly 80 km, mostly gently downhill and traffic-free. Merano → Bolzano adds ~30 km on the Etschtal route, so Mals→Bolzano is ~110–120 km over several days, plus an optional Wine Road day.
  • Starting higher than Mals (at Reschen): the classic way to ride the whole valley is to start at the top, by the Reschensee (the half-submerged church tower). The BikeLiner only runs Merano↔︎Mals, so to get above Mals take public bus line 273 (Mals → Reschen), or the private Südtirolbike shuttle (Merano → Resia, ~€20–25 pp with ≥5 riders; book at suedtirolbike.info). From Reschen it’s a ~20 km, ~500 m descent down to Mals.
  • BikeLiner bike shuttle: daily 18 Apr – 4 Oct 2026, Merano→Mals (board only in Merano; drop-offs at Naturns, Latsch, Schlanders, Spondinig, Mals). Online booking mandatory by 6 pm the day before (bikebooking.suedtirolmobil.info); needs a travel ticket + €7 bike day-ticket. Regular & e-bikes only (no tandems/cargo/trailers).
  • Vinschgau railway (Merano–Mals) is resuming gradually in 2026 after electrification works, with limited bike capacity — useful for skipping a leg, but don’t rely on it for bikes without checking close to your dates.
  • Rough plan on Komoot from Mals - Malles Venosta to Salorno sulla Strada del Vino - Salurn an der Weinstraße

1 — WINE (every vineyard on the route)

Four wine bands, top to bottom: the high, dry Val Venosta; the milder Meraner hills; the Bolzano basin of Lagrein & Santa Maddalena; and the South Tyrolean Wine Road south of Bolzano — the densest and prettiest stretch, easily a day on its own.

A. Lower Val Venosta / Vinschgau (Castelbello – Naturns)

South Tyrol’s smallest, highest-altitude zone (≈500–900 m), extremely dry, dominated by small independent growers. Whites shine — Riesling, Pinot Bianco, Müller Thurgau — alongside elegant Pinot Noir and indigenous Vernatsch (Schiava).

Quick planning notes

  • Booking tastings: Falkenstein and Unterortl are small and best by appointment / scheduled tour; the big cooperatives (Merano, Bolzano, Tramin, Kaltern, St. Michael) have walk-in shops with set hours and bookable tours — easiest to slot in.
  • Cycling + wine: plan tastings for late afternoon / end of a riding day, and lean on the BikeLiner bus or Vinschgau train if a tasting day runs long.
  • Closing days matter: many restaurants and small wineries close Sun/Mon (sometimes mid-week), and the Wine Road has lots of dinner-only cellars from ~17:00. Reconfirm the day before — especially the gourmet/Michelin spots and small Val Venosta growers.

Compiled June 2026. Hours, prices and scores change — verify directly before relying on any detail.
